Dermatitis is the synonym of eczema. Dermatitis involves an acute condition while eczema is a chronic one. There are various types of dermatitis and they are categorized according to the origin of the condition. Dermatitis is not contagious and life-threatening but you may feel uncomfortable and awkward. This skin disorder can have various causes and may arise in different forms. You may feel and experience itchiness, swelling and reddening of skin which may be severe.

Treating dermatitis can involve a combination of self-care steps and medications. Contact dermatitis is caused by direct contact with irritants like soap, jewelry, cosmetics, weeds and poison ivy and poison oak. You will notice red rash or bumps, dry red patches may also occur and feeling of pain and tenderness. Before you can treat this skin condition, you have to identify first the cause of the inflammation. After identifying the culprit, try to keep away from it and the rash will eventually heal in two to four weeks time. Self-care care measures can help relieve and reduce swelling by wet compresses and anti-itch creams. Contact dermatitis may be classified into two categories depending on the cause.

Irritant contact dermatitis is more common and may be a cause of repeated contact with substance like deodorants, soap, cosmetics or other skin products that irritates the skin. You will notice dry itchy patches on the hands, face and fingers. Bleaches and strong acids can also cause irritation in just one exposure. Oil and protective barriers from the skin is removed by these substances.

Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by a reaction to substances called allergens that is a result of the reaction of one’s body to the sensitive agent. It produces bumps, red rash and sometimes blisters.
