Those who are more prone to acne are teenagers and those who are in their 20s and even children and older adults. It usually last for three to four years but there are cases that it can continue up to eight to twelve years. A smaller percentage of 5%, acne may last in age beyond 25 and may continue up to age 40. In women, acne may occur prior to their menstrual period. Severe cases of acne usually attack men because they generate more male hormones that encourage acne formation. Women with lots of hair in the body and face are also prone to acne. Women with irregular periods have also increased risk of acne so they have to consult a physician to have their hormone levels evaluated.
